When thinking back upon 2017, I an reminded of this classic Bill Murray line, from a film about to turn 30.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UN6e4Nns2i0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t even get paid to do this, and yet I&#8217;m forcing myself to, for you. So at least pretend to enjoy it. Like 2017, it&#8217;ll be over and done before you know it. Fingers crossed.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This has been a weird year for\u00a0<em>Bands I Useta Like.\u00a0<\/em>Luckily, it most likely was for you, too. All lines became blurred. I came to hate the things I once loved. Literally, I hit the point where it&#8217;s easier to tell people to fuck off than to reason with them. Reason is worm food. Mistah Logic- He Dead.<\/p>\n<p>Dead or accused of sexual harassment: that was 2017. Let&#8217;s begin with January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/youre-winner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Look how healthy and happy the site was!<\/a> This was when I was averaging 14 articles a month. I don&#8217;t recall specifically who died in January 2017, so let&#8217;s just assume &#8220;everybody&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I began a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/experience-vs-evidence\/\">full-scale assault on social media<\/a>. Also\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/moonlighting\/\">Moonlighting<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/nothing-that-hovers-is-good\/\">hoverboards<\/a>. There was supposed to be a 5th this year, but the 400th post hasn&#8217;t come up yet, so obviously more time must elapse. I set up a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patreon.com\/mattyboy\">Patreon page<\/a>, which proved to be every bit as hilariously demeaning as I&#8217;d predicted. If I possessed what you humans call &#8220;feelings&#8221;, I&#8217;d have scarfed cyanide long ago.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, looking back, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/2017\/01\/\">January 2017<\/a> was a pretty solid month around here. I&#8217;m starting to remember why I do these retrospectives. Oh man, wait until we hit the Summer Shithouse!<\/p>\n<p>February brings &#8220;Hate Proof&#8221; articles, and we kick off with the ultimate inspirational sonnet; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/hateproof-youre-the-best-around\/\">&#8220;You&#8217;re The Best (Around)&#8221;<\/a>. As soon as I figure out how I was able to write inspiring material again, I&#8217;ll get right back on it. Oh yeah; good weed. I had good weed when I wrote that. In doing so, I learned something. Some people just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/gafdren\/\">want to hate Trump<\/a>. They don&#8217;t give a fuck what you have to say. They don&#8217;t want to change. They just want to hate what they want. So let &#8217;em have their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/dear-bubble-people\/\">precious Bubble<\/a>. You&#8217;ll see in a few years that literally nothing written against Trump has any lasting power. It is no different than me hating &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; because I\u00a0<em>want to.\u00a0<\/em>To\u00a0<em>spite you and your feelings. It&#8217;s the\u00a0<strong>same thing.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Remember those fun, halcyon days, where I could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/why-i-love-jar-jar-binks\/\">exalt the Prequels sincerely<\/a>, as a way of helping fans reinterpret the familiar and\/or maligned?\u00a0<strong>Brutally murdered. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/ah-leia-akbar\/\">Dead<\/a>. Enjoy your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-commoditization-of-emotional-discovery\/\">sequels<\/a>. We lost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/why-we-all-love-bill-paxton\/\">Bill Paxton<\/a>, but gained Valentines from my dwarf hamster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/valentines-vern\/\">Vern<\/a>. We got in and out of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/pet-ophelia\/\">weird area<\/a>, and talked about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/avuncular-nation\/\">uncles<\/a>. No wonder this website doesn&#8217;t get listed on any search engines worth a shit.<\/p>\n<p>In March, we lost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-end-of-the-line\/\">Jay Lynch<\/a>. I was lucky to know Jay over the last ten years of his life, and truthfully, without his guiding satirical hand, I&#8217;ve felt adrift as a humorist. I&#8217;m not the only one who feels this way, so let&#8217;s just acknowledge that we&#8217;re aware of the problem and move on. I have temporarily lost the ability to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/a-toast-to-absent-friends\/\">properly eulogize anyone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/meet-the-musical-meddler-squad\/\">Musical Meddler Squad<\/a> was formally introduced this month, the brainchild of myself and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meddlergames.com\">author J.P. Kittens<\/a>. Check out that link, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/bookstore\/\">Bookstore<\/a>; we&#8217;ve got seven books for you thus far. Reading them all gives you a preternatural understanding of Steely Dan, and many other chart-topping 1970s combos. I unleashed another anti-Disney thesis, wherein I explain that Disney is responsible for the worldwide falsehood that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/signature-moves\/\">lemmings are suicidal<\/a>. Like a vegan who stopped eating meat after seeing a slaughterhouse, I cannot in good conscience support anything with Disney&#8217;s signature on it. I have seen the terrible machinations behind the curtains. I have franchises of my own to protect.<\/p>\n<p>If no one coughs, and someone hears it, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/hold-me-and-cough\/\">does it make a sound<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Other milestones: Chuck Berry <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/rock-roll-will-never-die\/\">duck-walks on<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/just-a-pod\/\"><em>Mike the Pod<\/em><\/a> turns 30. What the fuck happens when you start working on the next issue, and suddenly you&#8217;re bored with your previous work? Is that just how it goes? What\u00a0<em>is<\/em> the endgame, anyway? Does anyone care anymore?<\/p>\n<p>The strip for this month was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/sepultura\/\">Sepultura<\/a>. To date, I don&#8217;t know whether you say it with the accent on the\u00a0<em>pul\u00a0<\/em>or the\u00a0<em>tur<\/em>. I don&#8217;t really care, to be honest, so don&#8217;t correct me if I&#8217;m wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I introduced everyone to my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/second-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sister site<\/a>,\u00a0<em>Ceaseless Fables of Beyonding,\u00a0<\/em>which will be celebrating its 360th page this Sunday, concluding nine years of weekly strips. Yes, for the past nine years, I have been writing, drawing and coloring a comic page <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceaselessfables.com\/cfb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">every week<\/a>. Even on top of what you see here. Even including the Meddler Squad books, and whatever you see me ranting about dealing with, on Facebook. Try and create 52-100 of\u00a0<em>anything<\/em> in one year, other than blog posts. If you succeed, ask everyone how much fun\u00a0<em>you\u00a0<\/em>were to be around. Spoiler alert:\u00a0<strong>no.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I found a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-40-year-old-version\/\">40-year-old\u00a0<em>Playboy<\/em><\/a> at a yard sale, and was reminded of the fact that life is basically hell with AIDS in 2017. I reevaluated my opinions of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/i-never-liked-you-2-live-crew\/\">2 Live Crew<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/ice-cube\/\">Ice Cube<\/a>. I owned up to my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/forever-insufferable\/\">insufferable nature<\/a>, and taught you how your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/insecurities-fraud\/\">insecurities are being preyed upon<\/a>. Some of my personal favorites came along in May; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/an-imaginary-morning-with-moby\/\">that morning I imagined I spent with Moby<\/a>, or that weird incident at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/rocketry-club\/\">Rocketry Club<\/a>. I told you what you\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/what-you-need-to-hear\/\">needed to hear<\/a>. You asked, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/where-is-the-love\/\">Where is the love?<\/a>&#8220;, and I replied that those are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/lamest-last-words\/\">lamest last words<\/a>. I don&#8217;t think this is fun anymore, for either of us.<\/p>\n<p>Much like a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-pac-simile\/\">lot of Atari 2600 games<\/a> were, back in the day. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/forgotten-freedoms\/\">Cut-outs<\/a> and homemade lemonade stands were superior. Well, until\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/chortle-combat\/\">Mortal Kombat<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>hit the arcades.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/2017\/06\/\">June<\/a>: even fewer articles, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/inner-circle\/\">Inner Circle<\/a> as the opener! Then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/liaison-of-the-spiders\/\">spiders<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/phuck-phones\/\">phones<\/a>, and more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-other-no-exit\/\">comics<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/willy-murphy\/\">guys you&#8217;ve never heard of<\/a>! There&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-pink-panther-problem\/\">Pink Panther<\/a>, and the first set of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/prideful-moments\/\"><em>Prideful Moments<\/em> cards<\/a>! One is a repeat that previously was only seen on the\u00a0<em>BIUL\u00a0<\/em>Facebook page and in the magazine, regarding the passing of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-day-pekar-died\/\">Harvey Pekar<\/a>. The other two are about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/no-dark-sarcasm-in-the-classroom\/\">why comedy stinks in 2017<\/a>, and the price and importance of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-gadfly-trap\/\">being a gadfly<\/a>. I make a pretty good case for both, if I may say so.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/2017\/08\/\">August<\/a>, I attempted to right the ship. Haters were in full swing with their Nazi hysteria by this point, before resorting to even lower tactics, so I had to plead for calm and pledge support for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/million-dollar-extreme\/\">blacklisted comedy show<\/a>. The &#8220;Harassacre&#8221; had not yet begun to unfold. How young and innocent we all were, just mere months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Remember; there&#8217;s always <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/mad-doctors-of-the-late-20th-century\/\">toys<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/barnstorming\/\">games<\/a>. Even when it&#8217;s all coming down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/2017\/09\/\">September<\/a> began the trend of three-update months, which continued to the present. I was kicked out of my home of five years in September. I found myself in another situation where working was impossible due to the environmental strain. I don&#8217;t have another fucking avocation, folks. If I can&#8217;t work, I can&#8217;t make money, and I start to die. I don&#8217;t run headlong into a disparate calling. I just die. Much like newsprint, common courtesy, and humor. I don&#8217;t go do other shit, or become something else. I just die.<\/p>\n<p>Like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-king-of-the-world-as-far-as-i-know\/\">Walter Becker<\/a>, and one of my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/2012-the-sketchbook\/\">closest friends<\/a>. So maybe, just maybe, when someone you know is suffering, the last thing they want to hear is &#8220;just give up and do something different&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This month&#8217;s new strip was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/king-missile\/\">King Missile<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/2017\/10\/\">October<\/a>, and addressing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/hiatus-hernia\/\">dearth of new material<\/a>. The best I could muster for Halloween 2017 was a salute to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-orphanage-at-dreary-knolls\/\">master illustrator Ralph Reese<\/a>, and then I suggested that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/on-the-turning-away\/\">everyone GTFO the Internet<\/a>. My feelings in that regard are only strengthened by the current month. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/about-star-wars\/\">You know why<\/a>. It makes me sick to even think about it anymore. Congratulations, Mouse Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>I started to brace for impact in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/2017\/11\/\">November<\/a>, by reminding everyone that these wars are fought over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/its-not-real-to-them-damnit\/\">imaginary matters<\/a>. I even played some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/little-girls-little-guns\/\">prescient Oingo Boingo<\/a>. But you just couldn&#8217;t let up with the self-censorship bullshit. You kept bringing up how you worry &#8220;for your children&#8221;, as if they embodied your own fears. You kept claiming that &#8220;this word&#8221; or &#8220;this gesture&#8221; means something\u00a0<strong>bad<\/strong>, and you get to be the arbiter of such, and judge people. Especially if you disagree with them. That&#8217;s what it all comes down to; you&#8217;re afraid other people will find out you&#8217;re wrong.\u00a0<strong>You&#8217;re afraid. Your every action is born out of fear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>If it wasn&#8217;t, why would you react so vehemently? What difference does it really make if someone disagrees with you? What actual fucking import does it have on your existence? Why do you feel the need to categorize people who don&#8217;t think like you do? Does that make them easier to tolerate?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/social-justice-whores\/\">Easier to wage an imaginary war against<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Hold on, we&#8217;re almost done. Don&#8217;t turn the lights off yet.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s nearly over. This article was as tedious as the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/2017\/12\/\">December<\/a>. New strip for you; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/cheap-trick\/\">Cheap Trick<\/a>. That&#8217;s right. I refuse to let the strip die. Its reservoirs of spite are far from depleted. The more you hate it, the stronger it becomes. And\u00a0<strong>2018 is its 20th anniversary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The beauty of it is this; by the time I think I&#8217;ve dried the well, new anecdotes have grown. It&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/the-catch-22\/\">far from evergreen<\/a>, but it doesn&#8217;t stink just yet. I can use a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/scatterbrain\/\">strip from 2011<\/a> to evoke memories from the early &#8217;90s. I can casually blast out a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/bully-for-you\/\">confession about being bullied<\/a>, to instruct and edify. This is why I will likely continue this self-flagellation and folly for another year. I have to, or die.
