Dire Straits<\/b>\u00a0were a\u00a0British rock\u00a0band that formed in\u00a0Deptford, London, in 1977 by\u00a0Mark Knopfler\u00a0(lead vocals and lead guitar), his younger brother\u00a0David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals),\u00a0John Illsley\u00a0(bass guitar and backing vocals), and\u00a0Pick Withers\u00a0(drums and percussion). Dire Straits’ sound drew from a variety of musical influences, including\u00a0jazz,\u00a0folk, and\u00a0blues, and came closest to\u00a0beat music\u00a0within the context of\u00a0rock and roll. Despite the prominence of\u00a0punk rock during the band’s early years, their stripped-down sound contrasted with punk, demonstrating a more “rootsy” influence that emerged from\u00a0pub rock.
