Why is Walt Disney’s signature on\u00a0Star Wars?<\/em><\/p>\n

Look, kids! Vague, controllable versions of things you love! Signed by a corpse who had no part in any of it! BUY BUY BUY!!!<\/p><\/div>\n

Not just his name; his\u00a0signature.\u00a0<\/em>As though he was the architect of its design. Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, right? Tinkerbell, sparkly glitter, and magic castles. Horrible TV-movies every Sunday.\u00a0That’s\u00a0<\/em>Walt Disney. Around 1980, I was into\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>to\u00a0get away\u00a0<\/em>from all that corny shit.<\/p>\n

Now you’re telling me it’s Walt Disney’s property?<\/p>\n

As far as I know,\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>exists because of another man: George Lucas. He began the saga in 1972, as “The Journal of the Whills”. Five years later, he released a film that changed the world forever, which was parodied so often the spoofs became a\u00a0cottage industry. Lucas’ favorite parody,\u00a0Hardware Wars,\u00a0<\/em>was made by a fan named Ernie Fosselius. Ernie went on to provide voices like the pilots of Lao Che Air Freight in\u00a0Temple of Doom,\u00a0<\/em>and the controversial “Lapti Nek” sequence from the original\u00a0Return of the Jedi.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

(“Lapti Nek” was written by composer John Williams’ teenage son*, much like\u00a0M*A*S*H<\/em>‘s “Suicide Is Painless” was written by Robert Altman’s 13-year-old son Mike. Maybe Lucas or Williams wasn’t thrilled with the piece by the time 1997 rolled around, and replaced it with “Jedi Rocks”. But like I say, hell hath no fury like a moviegoer who memorized a movie as a child.)<\/p>\n

(*Teenage Joseph Williams also wrote the “Yub Nub” music that the Ewoks originally sang<\/a> at the end of\u00a0ROTJ<\/em>. Did you complain when\u00a0that\u00a0<\/em>was cut out of the Special Edition? I’m betting you did not.)<\/p>\n
