Eh, just in case&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Four species have been named in his honor.<\/li>\n<li>NASA named a treadmill on the International Space Station after him.<\/li>\n<li>He was a cast member and writer on the now-legendary\u00a0<em>Dana Carvey Show<\/em>, where\u00a0<em>Ambiguously Gay Duo<\/em> first appeared (voiced by Colbert and Steve Carell, animation by the great J.J. Sedelmaier).*<\/li>\n<li>He grew up in South Carolina, and due to the open prejudice against men with Southern accents, he suppressed his by imitating the basic &#8220;anchorman&#8221; voice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*Also very, <em>very<\/em> highly recommended from <em>TDCS<\/em>: the sketch &#8220;Waiters Who Are Nauseated By Food&#8221;, featuring Colbert and Carell. Why are all the best sketch comedy shows so short-lived?<\/p>\n<p><em>Exit 57<\/em> wasn&#8217;t a troupe, like Monty Python; it was the title for a congregation of comedians; Colbert, Paul Dinello, Mitch Rouse, Jodi Lennon, and Amy Sedaris. I&#8217;m betting those names are familiar to you as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57b.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1461\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1461\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/lost-loves-exit-57\/exit57b\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57b.jpg?fit=350%2C263&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"350,263\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"exit57b\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57b.jpg?fit=350%2C263&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1461\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57b.jpg?resize=350%2C263\" alt=\"exit57b\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57b.jpg?w=350&amp;ssl=1 350w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57b.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Strangers with Candy<\/em> was a satire of the moralistic &#8220;after-school specials&#8221; of the 70s and 80s, and it was not only clever but legitimately cringe-inducing. Jerri Blank, age 46, returns to the high school she dropped out of, after a wasted youth as a &#8220;boozer, a user, and a loser&#8221;. For 30 episodes from 1999 to 2000, Jerri establishes herself as an astronomical grotesque, in a scathing, self-deprecating portrayal by\u00a0<strong>Amy Sedaris.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57c.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1462\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1462\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/lost-loves-exit-57\/exit57c\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57c.jpg?fit=263%2C350&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"263,350\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"exit57c\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57c.jpg?fit=263%2C350&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1462\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57c.jpg?resize=263%2C350\" alt=\"exit57c\" width=\"263\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57c.jpg?w=263&amp;ssl=1 263w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57c.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not saying &#8220;Amy&#8221; is a &#8220;comedy name&#8221;, but it certainly seems that way. <em>Exit 57<\/em> had Sedaris, and\u00a0<em>Upright Citizens Brigade\u00a0<\/em>had Amy Poehler. Poehler went on to be the next best thing about NBC&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Parks and Recreation<\/em> (besides Nick Offerman), and I think that it needs to be publicly acknowledged that her hair looks absolutely smashing in every episode. Chris Elliott&#8217;s daughter is named Abby, but that&#8217;s just how Gerard Depardieu says &#8220;Amy&#8221; when he has a cold, so I&#8217;m counting it.<\/p>\n<p>All cast members of\u00a0<em>Exit 57<\/em> were graduates of Chicago&#8217;s Second City comedy branch. Amy Sedaris often collaborated with her brother, playwright and humorist David, as &#8220;The Talent Family&#8221;. On\u00a0<em>Exit 57<\/em>, she was like a blond Gilda Radner, especially opposite Jodi Lennon.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0w2b8rtArws?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tell me this next sketch doesn&#8217;t make a perfect case for &#8220;girl humor&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-YE4NLMAHuM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an old favorite of mine with Sedaris and Colbert:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2Z4GyRPYupk?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Exit 57<\/em> had the loopy absurdity of\u00a0<em>Mr. Show<\/em>, but also the solid character work and depth of <em>Kids In The Hall.\u00a0<\/em><strong>Mitch Rouse<\/strong> made recurring appearances as an extremely traumatized victim of a violent assault, and I know I&#8217;m not making it sound funny, but it was, and then some. He did this thing where he&#8217;d wiggle his fingers in front of his swollen eyes, and it was side-splitting. (Really! I&#8217;m serious!) Rouse later showed up on <em>Reno 911!,<\/em> and when he got married in 2001,\u00a0<em>Jennifer Aniston<\/em> was the matron of honor.<\/p>\n<p>The core troika of <em>Exit 57<\/em> was definitely Colbert, Sedaris, and\u00a0<strong>Paul Dinello<\/strong>. Dinello reminds me of Paul Greenberg from the <em>also<\/em> short-lived <em>Vacant Lot;<\/em> a diminutive yet formidable pinch hitter. On <em>Strangers<\/em>, Dinello played Geoffrey Jellineck, the perfect realization of a gay art teacher just barely inside the closet. Dinello had a gift for delivering lines that twist at the end, making every scene with Jellineck pure gold.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s not a cold sore! I bumped my lip on a biscuit!&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2003, Sedaris, Dinello and Colbert published a book called\u00a0<em>Wigfield<\/em>, which captures the off-ramp feel of\u00a0<em>Exit 57<\/em> more than\u00a0<em>Strangers&#8217;<\/em> Flatpoint High. Wigfield is a tiny town that may actually be a 1\/4 mile of concrete and gravel, threatened by the impending destruction of a local dam. Despite this, Wigfield claims a loyal population of oddballs, all played in photographs by the three comedians. The &#8220;author&#8221; is so desperate to wring 30,000 words out of a boring assignment that he resorts to adding his r\u00e9sum\u00e9. Colbert appears as a woman more than once, and it&#8217;s weirdly convincing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57d.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1464\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1464\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/lost-loves-exit-57\/exit57d\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57d.jpg?fit=274%2C350&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"274,350\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"exit57d\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57d.jpg?fit=274%2C350&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1464\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57d.jpg?resize=192%2C245\" alt=\"exit57d\" width=\"192\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57d.jpg?w=274&amp;ssl=1 274w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bandsiusetalike.com\/biul\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/exit57d.jpg?resize=235%2C300&amp;ssl=1 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hunt that book down (I think it&#8217;s in paperback now) if you miss the\u00a0<em>Exit 57<\/em> days, it pretty much hits the spot.
