I have been a DEVO fan- a “DEVOtee”, if you will- for a very long time. 35 years ago, I was witnessing the video for “Whip It” for the first time, on the brand-new cable channel MTV. I knew a lot of spoiled kids.

It’s not one of my favorite DEVO singles, but I appreciate its historical importance. Even today, it sounds truly weird. However, it came to be so closely linked with DEVO and their visual style, eventually it was the only song anyone brought up. Continue reading →
The greatest living rock star has now left us to join the cosmos, at the Piscean age of 69. There is no figure of comparable importance to liken him to; he was the very definition of unique. His unisex shoes will go unfilled. He was a magician in mod clothing. He blazed the trails we all gladly followed.
As it turns out, he was mortal. Who knew? Did he ever give the slightest indication that he was like us? As far as I could tell he was an archangel from a Peter Chung cartoon. In film, he played wizards and aliens with such flair and confidence, it was clear he had an inside connection. His music was a solace and a balm for me since grade school. Since I was a Young American. He was the Homo Superior.
The best I can offer right now, just days after his surprise passing from this realm, is to share some of the music that he created that improved the quality of my existence. David Bowie was a superman of a million gifts, and he shared them all with us.
Most important of all, the gift of sound and vision.
